North to northwest aspect (COSEWIC 2024a). 2021-SP: 15 colonies (Jacob 2023). 2020-08-23: Observed (iNaturalist 2022b; Fenneman 2021). 2020-06: 14 colonies with 3 new colonies and 2 colones were no longer present (Jacob 2023). 2019-05: 13 colonies with 3 new colonies (Jacob 2023). 2018-SP: 10 colonies (Jacob 2023). 2017-SP: 10 colonies (Jacob 2023). 2016-SP: 10 colonies with 1 new colony (Jacob 2023). 2015-SP: 9 colonies with 1 new colony (Jacob 2023). 2014-SP: 8 colonies with 1 new colony (Jacob 2023). 2013-05: 7 colonies with 1 new colony (Jacob 2023). 2012: 6 colonies. Achuff, pers. comm.).CDFair or poor estimated viability2023-06-03Single individual in an area of imminent pipeline development, but mitigation is still possible. In the absence of direct destruction, the probability of this species persisting at this site over the next 20 years remains only fair to poor, because of the small population size.2004: With capsules (P. Achuff, pers. comm. 2007). 2009: 2 colonies with signs of stress (browning) post construction; 2010-2012: All patches were in a similar condition to 2009 except for one tuff had fallen in 2011 and one colony displaced in 2012; 2013: Colonies healthy overall and first sporophytes observed since construction; 2014: F7 almost totally removed and the other patches remain healthy; 2015: Sporophytes observed at 3 patches; 2016: Sporophytes at 1 patch. New stems at 2 patches, 1 patch less discoloured, and 1 patch more discoloured; 2017: Sporophytes at 1 patch. New stems at 2 patches, discolouration decreased at 3 patches and most patches increased in length/width; 2018: 1 patch with additional stems, 1 improved colour, 5 improved growth; 2019: 1 colony accidentally dislodged and replaced, 3 with worsening colour/mortality, and 7 with increased length; 2020: 3 colonies with sporophytes, 4 with worsening colour/mortality, and 3 increased in size; 2021: Sporophytes at 2 colonies, increase in size at 3, and discolouration at 3; 2023: Sporophytes at 1 colony, 2 increased in size, and 3 increased discolouration. Overall, colonies healthy (Jacobs 2023). 2024: Colony numbers increased since last status report due to new the discovery of new subsites. At TMX ROW, there are more colonies and a slightly larger area of occupancy in comparison to 2011 but the health is poor and declining. One colony accounts for most of the area (153.0 square cm), and a second colony that appears to be half-deceased (45.0 square cm), whereas remaining colonies contain few shoots and are being overgrown or exhibit dieback, likely from suboptimal microclimate (COSEWIC 2024a).2004: One individual plant over 10 cm x 10 cm (P. Achuff, pers. comm. 2007). 2009: 7 individuals observed (Arthur 2009, Jacob 2023). 2010: 7 colonies (Jacob 2023). 2011: 7 mature individuals over 163 square cm (COSEWIC 2011o, Jacob 2023); 3 newly discovered clusters (COSEWIC 2024a). 2012: 6 colonies (Jacob 2023). 2013: 7 colonies (Jacob 2023). 2014: 8 colonies (Jacob 2023). 2015: 9 colonies (Jacob 2023). 2016: 10 colonies (Jacob 2023). 2017: 10 colonies (Jacob 2023). 2018: 10 colonies (Jacob 2023). 2019: 13 colonies (Jacob 2023). 2020: 14 colonies (Jacob 2023). 2021: 15 colonies (Jacob 2023). 2022: 79 colonies observed over 4,675 square cm from 5 clusters (COSEWIC 2024a). 2023: 14 colonies over 242.5 square cm (COSEWIC 2024a); 14 colonies over 956 square cm (Jacob 2023).2004: The original patch is in the middle of the Transmountain Pipeline Anchor Loop project. In August 2007, the area was flagged as a right-of-way and vegetation clearing began in the vicinity (P. Achuff, pers. comm. 2007). Habitat restoration and remediation from 2009 and 2010 included installation of a shade frame and planting trees and shrubs (Jacobs 2023). The colonies have been adversely affected by tree removal during pipeline construction in 2007-2008. Some colonies are declining and habitat quality may continue to decline in the future despite restoration and remediation efforts. Threats include wildfire due to close proximity to rail line and Highway 16, recreation as walking on the rocky outcrop can dislodge plants, and stochastic events due to small patch size. Mountain pine beetle infestation also threatens the moss as tree mortality wIn forest on shaded, saturated (wet-mesic) siliceous cliff.MontaneTERRESTRIAL: Cliff, Forest Needleleaf, On RockAchuff, P. Achuff, pers. comm.). BGood estimated viability2011Moderately-sized population. In the absence of competition from Bartramia pomiformis, Haller's apple moss may be able to spread at this site.2005: With capsules (P. Achuff, pers. comm.). 2011: With sporophytes. Colony numbers appear stable (COSEWIC 2011o).2005: 33 individuals over 600 square m (P. Achuff, pers. comm.). 2009: 39 individuals observed (Arthur 2009). 2011: 50 mature individuals over 5,526 square cm (COSEWIC 2011o).Competition from Bartramia pomiformis may be an important factor in the limited occurrence of B. halleriana. However, as the latter species does not appear to be present at this site, conditions may be more favorable for the persistence of B. halleriana (Belland 2001). 2011: The proposed Holmes River project is the most serious plausible threat. Diversion of water from a stream and loss of tree cover can both alter the microhabitat. The site is in a leave strip adjacent to a harvest block (COSEWIC 2011o). 2024: Colonies are within a deep ravine, making the threat of wildfire, drought, and climate change less severe due to the moderating influence of the topography and waterbody (COSEWIC 2024a).In forest on shaded, saturated (wet-mesic) cliff adjacent to waterfalls.MontaneTERRESTRIAL: Cliff, Forest NeedleleafAchuff, P.
